From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Isaacson practiced as a head and neck surgeon prior to entering an additional residency in radiation oncology at the SUNYDownstate Health Sciences University. Dr. Isaacson holds certifications in head and neck surgery otolaryngology and in radiation oncology. He has contributed articles to publications on stereotactic radiosurgery, optic neuropathy, glioblastoma, gamma knife radiosurgery, brain cancer, and carcinoma of the pharynx and larynx. Dr. Isaacson was inducted into the Academy of Clinical Excellence through theColumbiaUniversity College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2019. Named among America’s Top Doctors for Cancer by Castle Connolly from 2005 to 2013, he was recognized by Castle Connolly as among Top Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area between 2002 and 2014. Dr. Isaacson is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Steven R. Isaacson is a radiation oncologist who served the Columbia University Irving Medical Center for 30 years from 1989 before retirement. Hired as a clinical professor of radiation oncology, he served in that capacity until attaining emeritus status in 2015. During his tenure, he also served as the co-director for the Center for Radiosurgery from 1989 to 1998 and the co-director of the Gamma Knife Center from 1998 to 2015. Founding one of the very first gamma knife centers in the United States, Dr. Isaacson is renowned for developing a program for prosthodontists to develop appliances and devices for radiation shielding of the oral cavity and for skin cancer. He was one of the few twiceboard certified radiation oncologists treating both head and neck cancer at the institution and served as a radiation oncologist for head and neck cancer and central nervous system tumors. To prepare for his career, Dr. Isaacson earned an MD in the early 1970s.
