Alongside this, he has also been the founding chairman of the board of Ocean Champions since 2003 and treasurer of Global Warming Solutions IE-PAC since 2014. Dr. Moir holds a BA in natural sciences from Hampshire College, MS in science teaching and PhD in environmental studies from Antioch University, and a certificate from the Marine Biological Laboratory. He has been instrumental in the establishment of bioregional (watershed) and ecosystem-based management creating Salem Sound Coastwatch and has also been a leader in efforts to clean up Salem Sound and Boston Harbor. Dr. Moir is perhaps proudest of the Green Lawns/Healthy Soils Challenge. Communities compete for the highest percentage of homeowners not spreading quick-release fertilizer on their lawns. By fostering symbiotic relationships between grass plants, bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere, photosynthesis draws more carbon dioxide from the air, and with increased root exudate of carbohydrates, grass deepens soil. Resulting from Dr. Moir’s advocacy have been the 2008 Massachusetts Ocean Planning Act, 2010 National Ocean Policy, 2014 Harmful Algal Bloom Act, and 2016 Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. He received a Switzer Environmental Fellowship from the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation and a James Centorino Award for distinguished performance in marine education form the National Marine Educators Association. Earlier, Dr. Moir was the curator of natural history at Peabody Essex Museum, curator of education at New England Aquarium, executive director of Discovery Museum, assistant scientist at Sea Education Association, as well as worked as a seventh grade and elementary science teacher. Drawing upon over 40 years of experience in wildlife conservation, Dr. Rob Moir is exceptional in his field for breaking down barriers regarding humankind’s treatment of the earth’s ecosystems and marine life.
