To remain abreast of trends and developments in her industry, Dr. Parés-Matos has maintained affiliation with the American Chemical Society and the Eli Lilly Academy. Throughout the course of her career, she has attributes her immense success to her innate enjoyment of her work and her good-natured personality, noting that she has always held great intentions for her family, colleagues and students. In five years’ time, Dr. Parés-Matos would like to witness her graduate students complete more coursework and possibly escalate to the role of chairperson of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. Dr. Elsie I. Parés-Matos has always exhibited curiosity about matters that were unfamiliar to her. As a result of this curiosity, she desired to continually learn, as well as share her newfound knowledge with others. Deciding thereafter to delve into the field of education, she attended an acclaimed university in her native Puerto Rico, where she received a Master of Science in bioorganic chemistry in 1990. After accruing several years in her field, she earned a PhD in biochemistry from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 2000. Since 1990, Dr. Parés-Matos has excelled as a professor within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, where during her first five years, she taught organic chemistry and general chemistry. Alongside her primary responsibilities as an educator, she has also contributed to several articles in professional journals, including “Modeling and Molecular Docking Studies of the Cytoplasmic Domain of Wsc-Family, Full-Length Ras2p, and Therapeutic Antifungal Compounds.” She also authored the articles, “A Molecular Docking ELSIE I.
