Recently, her work has considered medieval and early modern literature retold for children, in words and pictures, prior to World War I: “Chaucer as Children’s Literature” (2004), “Shakespeare as Children’s Literature” (2008); “Chivalric Stories as Children’s Literature” (2014), “The Faerie Queene as Children’s Literature” (2016), and “Don Quixote as Children’s Literature” (2018). Dr. Richmond received the Conference on Christianity and Literature’s Book Award in 2000 and the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Text in 2008. Dr. Richmond was named a member of the College of Fellows, Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Graduate Theological Union and UC Berkeley, and given an Honorary LHD in 2008. She was a Fulbright Scholar at Oxford University, received a research grant from the American Council of Learned Societies, and is a member of several learned societies. Dr. Velma Bourgeois Richmond began higher education at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She graduated magna cum laude with a BA in 1951 and MA in 1952. She began study for a PhD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; earned a BLitt in medieval studies at Oxford University, England, in 1957; and completed the PhD in English in 1959. Dr. Richmond joined Holy Names University in 1958 as Instructor in English. She became Assistant Professor in 1960, Associate Professor in 1966, Professor in 1968 and Emerita Professor in 1997. She served as Chair of English, Speech and Drama; Dean of Academic Affairs; and Director of English Master’s Program. Dr. Richmond presented papers at academic conferences and published scholarly articles. She wrote and narrated “A Prologue to Chaucer,” a documentary, Films for the Humanities (1985).
