Mr. Henderson graduated cum laude from Culver Military Academy and graduated from the Princeton University School of Public and International Affairs in 1956. He served as board chair at both institutions. He also chaired national record-breaking major capital campaigns (at the time) and presidential searches for both. He was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving three years on the USS Willis A. Lee (DL-4), a destroyer leader in the Atlantic Fleet, and teaching at the United States Naval Academy. After leaving the Navy, he graduated from Harvard Business School with high distinction as a Baker Scholar. Mr. Henderson andhiswife, Mary (“Toots”), have four children and nine grandchildren. He remains active in his hometown of Columbus, Indiana. James A. Henderson is a retired chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Cummins Inc. He joined Cummins in 1964 as assistant to J. Irwin Miller, a highly respected international business leader known for his commitment to ethical behavior and to bettering society. Mr. Henderson became chief operating officer (COO) and a member of the Cummins’ Board in just 10 years. He served as president and COO for 18 years in an unusually effective partnership with his colleague Henry Schacht, who was chairman and CEO. With the support and trust of an experienced Board willing to invest long term, they led the transformation of Cummins from a company at risk because of foreign and domestic competition and takeover attempts into the worldwide leader in diesel engines and related products, paving the way for rapid, profitable growth worldwide. Mr. Henderson became CEO of Cummins in 1994 and retired in December 1999. Mr. Henderson served on the board of directors of many leading companies, often as lead director or compensation committee chair, including AT&T, International Paper, Inland Steel and its JAMES A.
