During this time, he was a sailing photographer and took photographs of several America’s Cup Regattas across the globe. While pursuing his photography business, Mr. Ragland was asked to serve on the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as the Selectman’s Committee on Parking and Traffic and the Greenwich Republican Round Table. He also excelled as chairman of the board of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service. In light of his community advocacy, Mr. Ragland ran for Mayor of Greenwich, for which he was elected and served from 1995 until his retirement in 1999. Mr. Ragland was recognized for his contributions to his country, the State of Connecticut and the Town of Greenwich. Exemplifying three diverse career paths – local politics, photography and architecture – Tom R. Ragland III is renowned across the Eastern coast for his contributions to the betterment of society and the arts. After departing from the U.S. Air Force, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, obtaining a BArch in architecture and planning. He also earned an MS in architecture, hospital planning and design from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. At the inception of his professional career in 1965, Mr. Ragland served as an architect with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill until 1971, and from 1971 to 1981, was the founding partner and vice president of The Ehrenkrantz Group in New York. During his tenure in architecture, he worked on several prestigious projects, including the Joseph H. Hirschhorn Museum, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Mount Sinai Hospital & School of Medicine. Although he enjoyed his career in architectural design, the strenuous demands of the industry – coupled with time apart from his family – led him to pursue other TOM R.
