For the following two years, she was a provider for Arizona State Hospital and the Arizona Children’s Association, and since 2017, has excelled as a general and pediatric psychiatrist for the Phoenix Indian Medical Center Behavioral Department. A diplomate of the Philippine Board of Psychiatry since 2002, Dr. Agudo holds board certifications from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dedicated to patient care, research and advancing psychiatric care, she was named 1996 Psychiatry Resident of the Year by Howard University, through which she presented a paper, “Panic Disorder Diagnosed as Schizophrenia: A Transcultural Issue,” at the 1995 National Medical Association Annual Chester Pierce, MD, ScD, Resident Research Symposium. Driven by her religious faith, Dr. Mercedes Engracia Agudo felt compelled to enter the field of psychiatry due to a calling from God. A native of the Philippines, she attended the University of St. Tomas in Manila, where she earned an accelerated BS in biology in 1984 before receiving an MD in 1989. Subsequently immigrating to the United States, she earned a degree in psychiatry from Howard University in 1996 before pursuing coursework in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia in 1998. Thereafter, Dr. Agudo returned to her native Philippines, where she entered private practice in Iligan City in 1998 and served as a facultymember at Mindanao State University College of Medicine from 1999 to 2002. Dr. Agudo returned to the United States and served as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Philhaven in Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, from 2002 to 2007 before becoming an inpatient staff psychiatrist at St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Center in Phoenix, Arizona, from 2007 to 2015.
