228 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Brief Strategic Family Therapy Institute is a family model system in which Dr. Muir serves by developing dissemination plans to distribute to international communities. In her first year as executive director, she secured a contract with the city of Stockholm, Sweden, to implement the program at a youth addiction facility. She has also been a licensed psychologist since 2000. A recognized speaker on youth and families nationwide, Dr. Muir previously earned an accolade as a minority research fellow of the National Institute of Mental Health and Columbia University’s Department of Child Psychiatry. She has maintained membership with the American Psychological Association and is a past national secretary of the Association of Black Psychologists. Looking toward the future, Dr. Muir intends to build upon her current career success and help implement policies to make mental health programs more affordable for low income families. Interested in psychology since her first year of high school, Dr. Joan A. Muir read a book about a child who struggled with depression, and upon engaging in play therapy, was able to cope with their mental illness and receive positive treatment. Fascinated by the subject, Dr. Muir decided to become a clinical psychologist, a role in which she excels to the present day. Receiving a Master of Arts and PhD, both in clinical psychology from Fordham University, she first served as a pre-doctoral fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine from 1992 to 1993 before becoming a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute from 1994 to 1995. At the inception of her professor career in 1998, Dr. Muir joined the faculty at the University of Miami as an assistant research professor, maintaining the role until 2004. Continuing her responsibilities at the renowned university, she has served as the executive director of the Brief Strategic Family Therapy Institute in the Miller School of Medicine since 2007.
