Exhibiting dual careers in ophthalmology and academia, Dr. Joan Marie O’Brien has excelled as the director of the Scheie Eye Institute and the William F. Norris and George E. de Schweinitz Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine since 2010. She has also served as the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. Prior, Dr. O’Brien served the University of California San Francisco between 1992 and 2009 as a full professor, associate professor, assistant professor, clinical instructor, endowed chairperson, and Pearl and Samuel Kimura Professor of Ophthalmology. Holding medical licenses in Massachusetts, California and Pennsylvania, Dr. O’Brien is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. To prepare for her career, she attended Middlebury College, graduating summa cum laude with a BA.
