237 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Equipped with an exceptional education and an impressive vocational background, Dr. Herzl R. Spiro recently took on the role of a psychiatrist at the Outreach Community Health Clinic in 2020. Prior to this endeavor, he served the Aurora Sinai Medical Center as a psychiatrist in addiction and geropsychiatry on an outpatient and inpatient basis from 2007 to 2020 and served in a private outpatient practice, in which half of his work involved civil forensic court cases, from 1999 to 2007. Lending his expertise to academia as well, Dr. Spiro was a professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1988 until attaining emeritus status in 1999, and previously taught at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the Rutgers University Medical School and the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, where he commenced his career in 1964. During his educational tenures, Dr. Spiro also served Milwaukee County as the director of mental health, as well as the Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital as president of the medical staff. He draws upon a Bachelor of Arts in government and an MD, cum laude, from the University of Vermont in 1955 and 1960, respectively. He completed an internship at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1961, and went on to pursue a residency in psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1961 to 1964. He also earned a PhD in psychology from Rutgers University in 1975. Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Spiro also holds a master psychopharmacology certificate from the Neuroscience Education Institute. Throughout his career, he has contributed articles to professional journals, books andmonographs, and recently authored “Of Hope: AMemoir” in 2020. In light of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Spiro received the Woodbury Prize from the Lamb Foundation, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Vermont Medical School, a Distinguished Service Award and the Anton Boisen Award in Psychiatry and Religion. He was also named Best Alumnus of the University of Vermont and is recognized as a fellow emeritus of the American College of Psychiatry. HERZL R.
