Dr. Botting holds a BA in English and philosophy from Trent University, MA in English from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and PhD in English literature and MFA in playwriting from the University of Alberta. At age 45, he entered law school at the University of Calgary, earning an LLB/JD and, later, his LLM and PhD in law from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Botting received awards from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, American Institute of Biological Sciences and U.S. National Pest Control Association for his contributions to science for hybridizing giant silk moths. He received awards for playwriting and short story writing and was awarded the 1984 Citizen of the Year Award by the Central Alberta Arts Council. He later received the 2015 Trent University Distinguished Alumni Award. Gary Botting has been a criminal defense lawyer for three decades and is widely considered the preeminent expert in extradition law in Canada. For 10 years, his texts “Canadian Extradition Law Practice” and “Halsbury’s Laws of Canada: Extradition” were the only current guides to extradition in Canada. His “Extradition between Canada and the United States” has been quoted authoritatively by the Supreme Court of Canada. Other books include “Fundamental Freedoms and Jehovah’s Witnesses,” “Wrongful Conviction in Canadian Law” and “Dangerous Offender Law.” Prior, Dr. Botting was a journalist with the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong and Peterborough Examiner in Ontario. Established as a journalist, editor, and publisher (as founding editor of Red Deer Press in Alberta), he is also an award-winning playwright, author and poet. His novels “Campbell’s Kids” and “Crazy Gran” sold out of their first edition in one week. “Streaking: The Collected Poems of Gary Botting,” which has gone through four printings, includes all the poems published in 10 earlier chapbooks, plus individual poems in literary magazines.
