He joined the firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP in Washington, D.C., in 2003 as counsel, and since 2005, has excelled as a partner of the firm. Previously, he was affiliated with Finnegan Henderson as a law clerk between 1981 and 1982. Earlier in his career, Mr. Coyne served as an associate and partner of Collier, Shannon, Rill & Scott between 1984 and 2003, as well as a law clerk to the Honorable Edward S. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit from 1982 to 1984. Drawing upon a BS in civil engineering, with high distinction, from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1979, he received a JD from the aforementioned institution in 1982 and was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar the same year. Since 2013, Mr. Coyne has also excelled as an adjunct professor at the Georgetown University Law Center. As a public speaker, he does up to 40 speaking engagements per year, whether he is moderating a panel or speaking before various programs. Contributing numerous written works to publications, he is a current co-chair of the Development Task Force and vice president of the Federal Circuit Historical Society. Additionally, Mr. Coyne is a fellow of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Bar Association. To attest to his success, Mr. Coyne received the AIPLA Project Award in 2011, the FCBA Enduring Leadership Award in 2009, and two FCBA Hutchinson Excellence in Committee Service Awards in 2004 and 2005.
