71 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION she received a BA in psychology in 1981, followed by an MS in experimental psychology and a PhD in psychology from Howard University in 1984 and 1988, respectively. Dr. Allen was a postdoctoral fellow and postdoctoral associate at Yale University between 1987 and 1990. Involved in academia for the entirety of her career, Dr. Allen has excelled as the president of Lincoln University since 2017. Earlier in her career, she was the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Winston-Salem State University and the associate provost and director of institutional diversity at Brown University. She commenced her career with Smith College, where she served in a plethora of academic and administrative positions. Although her career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Allen is especially proud of moving subset indicators for students, which includes retention and graduate rates during her tenure as provost. With Lincoln University being a historically Black university, Dr. Allen is humbled by her achievements in advancing the student retention and graduation rate for Black students. Leveraging her experiences at various Ivy League schools, she has since utilized her breadth of knowledge in providing an inviting, inclusive atmosphere for students of all backgrounds. Dr. Allen has lent her expertise to written works as well, having been a reviewer for several psychological journals. She has earned a number of accolades as well. Most recently, she won the Black History Month Community Service Award from the Salem Lodge in 2014 and the Woman of Achievement Award from the General Federation of Women’s Club and the Woman of Vision Award from the YWCA of Winston-Salem, both in 2013. Likewise, Howard University bestowed upon her the Distinguished PhD Alumni Award in 1998. Dr. Allen holds an honorary PhD from WinstonSalem State University. Dr. Brenda A. Allen’s curiosity about psychology piqued in high school upon taking an Advanced Placement psychology course. Learning that there were disparities between Black and white students in a psychological context, Dr. Allen intended to learn about those inequities and make a difference.
