Punctuating these appointments, she was recognized as a fellow of the National Institutes of Health at the university between 1978 and 1980. Earlier in her career, Dr. Beyer-Mears was an instructor of physiology at the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia from 1967 to 1971 and a fellow of the National Institutes of Health at Weill Cornell Medicine from 1963 to 1965. Alongside her primary pursuits, Dr. BeyerMears served as a visiting associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison between 1995 and 2014, and was a consultant for Alcon Laboratories (now Novartis AG). Civically engaged as well, she is a retired trustee of the National Foundation of Eye Research and excelled with the Christ Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church, Vassar College and the Episcopalian Diocesan Convention. Continuing her professional research and teaching in ophthalmology and pharmacology, Dr. Beyer-Mears has also lent her time to restoring the 1908 Eugene A. Gilmore House, also known as the “Airplane House,” which has been in her family since 1930. Restoring the house over the course of 20 years, she leveraged her own funding to bring the house to its original glory. Dr. Beyer-Mears holds a BA fromVassar College, an MS from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a PhD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She received the Wright Spirit Award from the Frank LloydWright Building Conservancy in 2007, as well as a Research Award from the Foundation for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1980 and National Research Service Awards from the National Institutes of Health from 1978 to 1980. Supported by more than 50 years of excellence in medicine and academia, Dr. Annette Beyer-Mears most recently served as an associate professor in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Physiology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey from 1986 until her retirement in 2014.
