In 1986, he earned a PhD in microbiology from the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University, and completed his education in 1992 with an MS in health sciences from New Jersey City University. At the inception of his career in 1988, Dr. Brown served as the director of microbiology at Roche Biomedical Laboratories before becoming the assistant commissioner of health for the State of New Jersey Department of Health in 1995. From 1996 to 1999, he was vice president of Celsis, and between 1998 and 2003, he was the assistant dean and an assistant professor at New Jersey City University. Upon departing from that role, he joined Ocean County College as an associate professor and the dean of science, engineering, health sciences and human performance from 2003 to 2013. Since 2012, Dr. Brown has been a part-time online professor at the City University of New York. Alongside this role, he also excelled as a part-time online professor at California State University, San Marcos and Gwynedd Mercy University. Certified as a master presenter by the University of Texas at Austin, he delivered the keynote address at Morgan State University in 2020. In light of his achievements, Dr. Brown has accrued numerous accolades. Among myriad others, he received the 2006 and 2012 President’s Award and 2009 Adoptive Family of the Year Award, as well as a Dennis J. Sullivan Award, Lloyd M. Flemly Award, National Marconi Award and 10 Most Outstanding Young Citizens of New Jersey Award. In 1998, he earned the Business and Education Leadership Award, and he has received citations from the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey and the U.S. House of Representatives. In his early years, Dr. James William Brown had a dream to help others who struggled with various diseases. Noting that the United States had viable drinking water, while other countries did not, he decided to delve into public health and microbiology.
