In 1976, Ms. Colbert received a BA in French from Wheaton College, followed shortly by a certificate from the Université de Dijon in 1979. Later in her career, she earned an MA in communications management from Simmons University in 1990, a certificate in TESOL from Columbia University in 2004 and an MEd in elementary education from Grand Canyon University in 2015. Between 2001 and 2011, she earned several certificates from academic institutions in Colombia, France and Russia. At the inception of her career in 1976, Ms. Colbert served as the head clerk for the Department of Developmental Disabilities in Boston for two years prior to becoming a French teacher and teaching assistant for the Bilingual Education Program at Saint Patrick’s School in New Hampshire. From there, she served numerous agencies in New York as a freelance translator, proofreader and typist before being hired by the United Nations as an editorial assistant, verbatim reporter and contributing editor between 1980 and 2013. While with the United Nations, she was a contributing editor to the UN Report and UN Secretariat News. Subsequent to retiring from the United Nations, Ms. Colbert was an educator in Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, New York. Since 2020, she has been a tutor. Notably, Ms. Colbert was an electoral observer for presidential elections in Mozambique during her tenure with the United Nations. A former treasurer of the UN Staff One Percent for Development Fund and current secretary of the coordination board of the United Nations Women’s Guild, she has maintained civic involvement with the United Nations Symphony Orchestra. She previously taught English as a Second Language at Columbia University between 2004 and 2006. Looking forward, she intends to continue teaching at an elementary school level. Guided by the influence of her mother, who was a teacher and editor, Nancy Jeanne Colbert became interested in language from an early age. Drawing upon prior studies in France when she was young, she attended the Université de Tours and received a certificate in 1972.
