82 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Falling in love with philosophy upon taking his first philosophy course during his undergraduate studies, Dr. Philip E. Devine received a BA in philosophy from Yale University in 1966, and went on to earn a PhD in philosophy from the University of California Berkeley in 1971. At the inception of his academic career in 1978, he served as a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse for one year before becoming an assistant professor at the University of Scranton from 1979 to 1984 and at Saint Cloud State University from 1984 to 1987. For the following two years, he was a professor-in-residence at Stonehill College, and then briefly served as an instructor at the University of Massachusetts’ University Without Walls in 1987. During the latter half of his career, Dr. Devine was a senior lecturer at Lesley College from 1987 to 1989, an instructor at Tufts University in 1988 and an instructor of continuing education at Emerson College from 1988 to 1989. He joined Providence College in Rhode Island in 1990, where he served as a professor until attaining emeritus status in 2015. During his career, Dr. Devine was also a Liberal Arts Fellow at the Harvard Law School in the early 1980s. Demonstrating versatility, Dr. Devine has contributed articles to professional journals, was a member of the editorial board for the Legal Studies Forum, and authored four books: “The Ethics of Homicide” in 1978 and 1990, “Relativism, Nihilism and God” in 1989, “Human Diversity and the Culture Wars” in 1996 and “Natural Law Ethics” in 2000. Notably, Dr. Devine has excelled as the president of the Rhode Island Association of Scholars since 1997, having previously served as vice president. He has also maintained affiliation with the American Catholic Philosophical Association and the Society of Christian Philosophers, and is a former member of the American Philosophical Association and the National Association of Scholars. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Devine cites his experiences at Harvard Law School to be most fulfilling, as it was where he became more interested in social and political philosophy.
