94 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION As a child living in Korea, Dr. Kwan S. Kim witnessed firsthand the devastation the country faced under the Japanese colonial occupation and the intervening wars of the Japan-China War, World War II, and the Korean War. He saw the resulting poverty and hunger of Korean civilians, and he sought to pursue a career to help developing countries prevent those tragedies. He obtained a BA from Seoul National University in 1959, and upon his immigration to the United States, he attended the University of Minnesota. There, he earned an MA in political science and a Ph.D. in economics in 1961 and 1967, respectively. Dr. Kim commenced his career as a research economist with the North Star Research and Development Institute in 1964, later serving for two years as an econometrician for the Pillsbury Company. He joined the University of Minnesota as an instructor from 1966 to 1967 before relocating to Indiana, where he joined the faculty of the University of Notre Dame as an assistant professor of economics. Remaining with the university for the remainder of his career, Dr. Kim served as an associate and full professor until attaining emeritus status in 2016. He was also a faculty fellow at the university’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies. Dr. Kim taught courses at home and abroad in economics, finance and econometrics, ranging from the freshman to the doctoral level, producing 14 PhDs under his direction. He has also provided consulting, advisory and training services to the governments of Kenya, Tanzania, South Korea, Mexico, and other international development agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development. Contributing over 80 articles to professional journals, Dr. Kim has authored or co-authored 14 books and monographs, most recently including “Lewisian Turning Point in the Chinese Economy” in 2014. To attest to his success, Dr. Kim was listed in 1,000 Leaders of World Influence by the American Biographical Institute in 2001 and was the recipient of the 2010 International Peace Research Award.
