95 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION After receiving his master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1954, Dr. Arthur William Leissa began serving as an engineer for Sperry Gyroscope Co. in Great Neck, New York. Returning to his alma mater in pursuit of his doctoral degree, he served The Ohio State University in numerous capacities, starting as a research associate in 1955 and escalating to the rank of instructor in 1956. As time progressed, he became an assistant professor in 1958, associate professor in 1961 and full professor in 1964, all specializing in the instruction of engineering mechanics. From 1991 until attaining emeritus status in 2001, Dr. Leissa served as a professor of mechanical engineering. Alongside his primary feats, Dr. Leissa has been active with several symposia within the United States and abroad, including in Colorado, Wyoming, Switzerland, England and Germany. He has been a visiting professor at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zürich, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Dr. Leissa holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, Master of Science and PhD, all from The Ohio State University. Throughout his career, he has contributed over 150 articles to professional journals and has served as an editorial board member of the Journal of Sound and Vibration, the International Journal of Mechanical Science, Composite Structure, Applied Mechanics Reviews, the Journal of Vibration and Control, and the International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics. Likewise, he has authored numerous texts, such as “Vibration of Plates,” “Vibration of Shells” and “Buckling of Laminated Composite Plates and Shell Panels.” A fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics, Dr. Leissa has earned myriad accolades and honors. In 2006, he received the Thomas French Achievement Award fromThe Ohio State University, having also received a Centennial Certificate from the American Society for Engineering Education in 1993 and a recognition plaque from the Instituto de Mecánica Aplicada in Argentina in 1977. Additionally, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers gave him the 2004 Applied Mechanics Award.
