83 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION Originally intent on going into science education, Dr. Ray Franklin Evert became acquainted with a botany professor during his collegiate studies, which influenced the remainder of his career. Attending Pennsylvania State University, he received a BS in 1952 and an MS in botany in 1954. From there, he went on to matriculate in the University of California Davis, receiving a PhD in 1958. At the inception of his career, he served as a faculty member at Montana State University before joining the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1960. During his tenure at the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Evert served as a professor of botany between 1966 and 1977, a professor of botany and plant pathology from 1977 to 1988, and the Katherine Esau Professor of Botany and Plant Pathology from 1988 until attaining emeritus status in 2001. Likewise, he chaired the Department of Botany from 1973 to 1974, and again from 1977 to 1979 and from 1994 to 1998. He was a visiting professor at the University of Natal in South Africa and the University of Göttingen in Germany. Throughout his career, Dr. Evert has authored or co-authored articles on food conducting tissue in higher plants and leaf structure-function relationships, as well as several books. In 2013, he co-authored the eighth edition of “Biology of Plants,” and in 2006, authored the third edition of “Esau’s Plant Anatomy, Meristems, Cells and Tissues of the Plant Body: Their Structure, Function and Development.” To attest to his success, Dr. Evert has earned several accolades, including a Guggenheim fellowship from 1965 to 1966, the 1974-1975 Alexander von Humboldt Award, the 1981 Emil H. Steiger Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin, election as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986, the 19981999 Hilldale Award for Distinguished Professional Accomplishments in the Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Centennial Award of the Botanical Society of America in 2006, among other honors.
