91 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION of hepatitis C. In 1977, he was hired by the Kobe University School of Medicine as a research associate, maintaining the role until 1986. After a brief stint as a visiting scholar at the Wistar Institute, he returned to Kobe University as an associate professor of microbiology in 1988 and was promoted to full professor and chair of microbiology in 1994. Transitioning to teaching in their Graduate School of Medicine in 2001, he remained in his roles until 2015 when he attained emeritus status. Subsequently, he was an endowed professor for the following three years. While at Kobe University, he also served as councilor, vice dean, and director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, the Medical Branch Library, the International Center for Medical Research and Treatment, the International Student Center, the International Center for Medical Research and the Institute for Experimental Animals. Since 2018, Dr. Hotta has maintained his position as a professor in the Faculty of Nutrition andClinical Dietetics at KonanWomen’s University. Throughout his career, he has also served as an honorary professor at Airlangga University and an adjunct professor at the University of Indonesia. He formerly lent his expertise to the J-GRID through the Japan Science and Technology Agency as project leader, as well as the SATREPS. Holding an MD from Osaka University and a PhD from Kobe University, Dr. Hotta has contributed over 250 articles to professional journals and authored “Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease” in 1994. A past president of the Japanese Society for Virology and member of the Japanese Society for Bacteriology and Japanese Society for Immunology, he has received Yearly Awards from the Asian Pacific Society for Medical Virology since 2008. Among his achievements, he is especially proud of discovering the mechanisms of hepatitis C that led to diabetic conditions. Studying medicine in light of the influence of his parents, Dr. Hak Hotta commenced his career as a physician at Osaka University Hospital in his native Japan in 1974 and Hyogo Prefectural Nishinomiya Hospital in 1975.
