458 MILLENNIUM A s a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Steven L. Giannotta has parlayed his experience as a neurosurgeon. Chairman of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Southern California since 2004, Dr. Giannotta became involved in his profession after originally deciding to become a mechanical and automotive engineer. After taking a class on the Freudian method of psychoanalysis, he changed his mind and decided he wanted to be a physician. From 1972 to 1978, he began his professional career at the University of Michigan as a surgical intern and neurosurgical resident. He later delved into postsecondary education, earning many positions at the University of Southern California, including assistant professor of neurosurgery, associate professor of neurosurgery and professor of neurosurgery at the University of Southern California. Dr. Giannotta’s successful career is backed by a Doctor of Medicine he earned from the University of Michigan in 1972. In five years, he intends to maintain and build the acoustic neuroma aspect of the practice and surgeries. Moving forward, he plans to focus on two sub-specialties. He remains a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Heart Association. J ohn R. Gibson is a retired software engineer with over four decades of experience in his field. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, he began his professional career as a computer programmer and analyst for the Computer Sciences Corporation from 1984 to 1990. He continued to advance in his career, obtaining many other engineering positions at companies across California, Colorado and Georgia, including science computer programmer, computer engineer, software tester, software engineer and embedded programmer. Mr. Gibson also served his country as a commissioned second lieutenant for the U.S. Air Force in 1973, advancing through the ranks to become captain in 1977 before resigning in 1983. Now retired from professional life, he enjoys playing checkers and continues to write articles for several magazines, as well as for the American Checker Federation Bulletin. Mr. Gibson has traveled to tournaments in Tennessee and Alabama and was president of the California Checker Association from 1999 to 2005. Steven L.
