496 MILLENNIUM B efore retiring in 1985, Cynthia J. Schumacher served as an elementary teacher, curriculum generalist, and secondary teacher for Lake County Schools. Ms. Schumacher prepared for her career by earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1950, a Master of Arts in 1951, and completing postgraduate work at Florida State University. After obtaining her master’s degree, she took on a position as an English teacher for the Grady County school system for two years and relocated to Florida, where she worked as an elementary teacher for the Brevard County school system from 1953 to 1955. Additionally, she was a member of the Quality Instruction Incentives Council and the Florida Education Standards Commission and served as president of the League of Women Voters of Lake County. She has penned several creative works, including poetry, stories and children’s books. Throughout her career, Ms. Schumacher has received awards and accolades for contributions to the field, these include being named 1985 Lake County Teacher of the Year, 1986 East Central Florida Teacher of the Year finalist, a state education association Lifetime Achievement award in 2000, and a Good Egg Award from the Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. F or more than three decades Liisa K. Selin has been ensuring her patients are properly taken care of as a physician. To prepare for her career, Dr. Selin earned a Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Medicine, and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. Her career began as a medical intern and later a resident in internal medicine, at the University of Manitoba. Since the start of her professional career in 1979, Dr. Selin has made great strides towards a successful career. Taking a turn from practicing, she began imparting her knowledge as an instructor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and since then, has continued a her career as an educator at the institution, earning positions such as assistant professor, associate professor and her current role as professor. She has continued to be an innovator in the field through her research in T-cell mediated heterologous immunity in viral infections and has earned much recognition for her work, including various research grants. She remains an active member of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada and the American Association of Immunologists. Cynthia J.
