26 MILLENNIUM T hor Alvegard believes that in order to be successful, one must be a leader. Dr. Alvegard has embodied those words as a medical educator and physician who prefers to aggressively treat his patients’ illnesses. He obtained a medical degree from the Free University of Berlin in 1968 and received a PhD from Lund University in 1989. Having become involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment with a focus on leukemia in 1970, he is an expert at treating Ewing’s sarcoma and osteosarcoma and has conducted research on prognostic factors in soft-tissue sarcoma, high-dose chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and total body irradiation. His diligence and medical experience aided him in his position at Lund University, where he was an assistant professor and diplomate, and served him in his role as director of cancer epidemiology at the same institution from 2000 to 2008. Dr. Alvegard has contributed his medical expertise to many professional journals on various topics, including oncology, surgery and clinical immunology. He has been a board member of and economic advisor to the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group and is an active member of EMSOS, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He was featured in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in 2011 and Who’s Who in the World from 2011 to 2016. Although retired, he is still helping to fight cancer and related diseases through his involvement in clinical trials across Spain, England, Germany, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
