34 MILLENNIUM D r. Lionel Vernon Baldwin served in academic administration for over 30 years, with his knowledge and skills aiding in his success. From its inception in 1984 until his retirement in 2000, Dr. Baldwin served as president of National Technological University. His goal was to create a nonprofit organization that offered graduate courses via satellite and led to a Master of Science. As its founder, he collaborated with engineering and management colleges across the United States. Prior to his incredible achievement of establishing a graduate learning institution, Dr. Baldwin held positions as an associate professor of civil engineering, dean, professor and acting dean for the College of Engineering at Colorado State University. He relied on his immense knowledge and expertise, as well as a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering, a Master of Science in chemical engineering and a PhD during his 23 years at the institution. In addition to his career as an academic administrator, Dr. Baldwin has also gained experience in the engineering field. He worked as a research engineer for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for two years. In 1959, he left the organization and became a unit head for NASA until 1961. For a period during his time as dean and professor at Colorado State University, he also served as director of Spherix. Dr. Baldwin has received many honors throughout his lengthy career, including an award for plasma research fromNASA, the Kenneth Andrew Roe Award from the American Association of Engineering Societies, and a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Notre Dame. He also received an Innovator Award from the Society of Satellite Professionals International, Engineering Manager of the Year from the American Society for Engineering Management, Entrepreneur of the Year from the Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce, and inclusion in the Engineering Education Hall of Fame. One of Dr. Baldwin’s greatest achievements was patenting an apparatus for increasing ion engine beam density.
