106 MILLENNIUM W ith experience as a rancher and state official, Dr. Peter R. Decker knows what it means to be multifaceted and dedicated. Dr. Decker obtained a Bachelor of Arts fromMiddlebury College, a Master of Arts from Syracuse University, and a PhD from Columbia University. He has held many educational positions in his career, including being a teacher at the Cate School, an instructor at Columbia University, Barnard College and Manhattan College, and an assistant professor at Duke University. He has also been a commissioner of agriculture for the state of Colorado, owner and operator of Double D Ranches, and president of Decker and Associates, a position he has held since 1989. Dr. Decker has served as director of the National Western Stock Show since 1990, director of the Denver branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, a member of the board of directors of theWestern Colorado Bank, and a member of the advisory board of Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. As an author, he has penned and published many books, including “Fortunes and Failures: White-Collar Mobility in Nineteenth-Century San Francisco,” “Old Fences, NewNeighbors,” “The Utes Must Go!: American Expansion and the Removal of a People,” “Saving theWest,” and “Red, White &Army Blue.” He has also written articles in professional journals and magazines. He has given back to his profession through his service and contributions as a trustee of Middlebury College, Fort Lewis College, and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education; chairman of the Ouray County Planning Commission; and chairman of Colorado Humanities. He also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and a captain in the Army Reserve. Dr. Decker is affiliated with the Denver Athletic Club, the Mile High Club, the Elks, the Colorado Authors’ League, and the English Speaking Union of the United States. He was an English Speaking Union scholar from 1952 to 1953 and served as a fellow of the National Endowment for Humanities and the Rockefeller Foundation. Peter R.
