47 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine P harmacologists like Dr. Craig Cano Beeson specialize in understanding how drugs affect the body and have the responsibility of drafting plans for pharmaceutical trials and creating guidelines for prescribing medication. To prepare for his career in medicine, Dr. Beeson acquired the education necessary, obtaining a PhD from the University of California in 1993. After completing his education, he was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University from 1993 to 1996. He took the experience and knowledge he acquired there to become an assistant professor at the University of Washington from 1996 to 2002. In 2002 he made his home at the Medical University of South Carolina as an associate professor and was thereafter promoted to full professor, a position he has held since 2016. During his tenure at the institution, he created the Beeson Research Group, a collaborative research effort, the primary focus of which is the regulation of energy metabolism and cell cycle progression. In addition to his teaching career, he served as president of MitoChem Therapeutics, Inc. from 2009 to 2014 and has been its chief executive officer since 2011. Dr. Beeson has contributed his knowledge to the field through his innovative inventions, including feed for lactating ruminants, compositions and methods for the treatment of degenerative diseases, and several new uses for bioconjugates. His groundbreaking work and dedication to the field have been honored with the Research Award from the Hispanic Society of America, the Career Award from the National Science Foundation, the postdoctoral award from the Cancer Research Institute, and a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
