49 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Rheumatology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. J. Claude Bennett has over five decades of professional experience training medical professionals at all stages of their careers. In 1958 Dr. Bennett honed his skills as an intern at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, subsequently embarking on his residency at the same facility the following year. With his newfound knowledge and skills, he became a molecular biology research associate for the National Institutes of Health, serving in that position for two years before becoming a research fellow for the division of biology at the California Institute of Technology from 1964 to 1965. After leaving the institute in 1965, he made a home at the University of Alabama Medical School, where he has been a professor, chairman of the departments of microbiology and medicine, director of the multipurpose arthritis center, and is currently the Spencer Chair in Medical Science Leadership. Dr. Bennett has shared his knowledge of the field as a contributor of numerous articles, papers, book reviews and abstracts to professional journals. He has also served as an editor and co-editor of several works, editor-in-chief of Arthritis & Rheumatism and the American Journal of Medicine, and an editorial board member of Protein & Peptide Letters, Current Opinion in Rheumatology, and Arthritis & Rheumatology. He remains a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Federated Council of Internal Medicine, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the National Academy of Medicine, the American College of Physicians and the American Association of Immunologists. Dr. Bennett’s successful career is backed by a Bachelor of Arts from Samford University and a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard University. J.
