69 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Ada Puryear Burnette became intrigued with the education profession because of the many avenues one could take, including teaching and directing different programs, and has maintained longevity in her field through her diligence and dedication. She has always asked herself how she can best help others to reach their potential and be the most that they can be. She loves contributing to the community and helping others do the same, teaching people, and showing them how to be flexible and willing to change if necessary to help their communities grow. Having come from a family that has been very civically active, she was sure to have followed a similar path. Over the past 60 years, Dr. Burnette has held several positions in the education field, including high school math teacher, elementary teacher, reading clinician, and director of two reading clinics. She was also a coordinator of freshman math, an early childhood and elementary education administrator, an associate professor, professor, and coordinator of on- and off-campus programs. At points in her career, she was a lecturer, consultant and adjunct professor, and she has been a regular columnist for professional journals since 1974. Additionally, she has written grant proposals and was a weekly columnist for Capital Outlook from 1991 to 1997. Dr. Burnette holds a Bachelor of Arts in math from Talladega College, a Master of Arts in reading from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from Florida State University. She also completed postgraduate work at several institutions, including Chicago State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Oxford University. She maintains affiliations and memberships with the National Association of African American Studies, the American Association of School Administrators, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
