70 MILLENNIUM A s chancellor emeritus and a professor of immunology and internal medicine, Dr. William T. Butler is a force to be reckoned with. Dr. Butler’s passion for keeping his patients healthy and educating future doctors is a testament to why he has been successful for six decades. Before teaching at the Baylor College of Medicine, he worked as an intern and assistant resident in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1958 to 1961. During his internship, he became a clinical fellow in medicine and later a research fellow in bacteriology and immunology. After seven years at the hospital, he began working for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 1961, working his way through the ranks to become acting head of the clinical immunology section and laboratory clinical investigations. From 1966 to the present, Dr. Butler has held teaching positions as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor of microbiology and immunology, and professor of internal medicine. Dr. Butler’s education also played a large role in his success. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1954, an MD from Case Western Reserve University in 1958, and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University in 1979. Additionally, he completed graduate work through the program for health and systems management at Harvard University in 1974. He participates in civic activities and maintains memberships in a plethora of medical organizations, such as the American Medical Association, the American Association of Immunologists and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Throughout his career, Dr. Butler has conducted research on infectious disease and immunology. In recognition of his accomplishments, he has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in America.
