73 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine J udy Canahuati is a certified lactation consultant with over 50 years of professional experience. As a lactation consultant, Ms. Canahuati is responsible for focusing on the needs and concerns of the breastfeeding mother and child to prevent, recognize and solve breastfeeding difficulties. She embarked on a professional career as a community organizer for Planned Parenthood in 1966, and four years later relocated to Honduras, where she continued gaining experience as an instructor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras, an import-export manager for Contessa Industrial, and technical advisor for USAID. She returned to the United States in 1968 as a technical advisor for Management Sciences for Health, working her way up as a member of the board of directors and a project director for La Leche League International, as well as a community advisory for Wellstart International. She was also a senior nutrition advisor for CARE USA; a maternal child health, nutrition and HIV advisor; and a technical advisor for USAID Food for Peace, where she has been since 2004. Additionally, she has served with many organizations internationally, including Centro de Apoyo a la Lactancia Materna, UNICEF, and Project Hope. As a member of the Review Committee for History of Nutrition of USAID, the International Lactation Consultant Association, the Consumer Education and Protective Association, La Leche League International, and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, Ms. Canahuati has contributed articles to professional journals, co-authored a breastfeeding planning manual and co-produced a video titled “Investing in the Future: Women, Work, and Breastfeeding.” Her contributions and service to the field have earned her fellowships from the National Institute of Mental Health, USAID Food for Peace and the Public Health Institute. Her career is backed by a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Philosophy in anthropology from Columbia University.
