She went on to work as a staff nurse at several facilities, including Columbia Hospital and St. Agnes Hospital (in Baltimore and Pittsburgh, respectively) before returning to Texas to fulfill the same role at Houston’s Gulfway General Hospital and the now-shuttered Southeast Baptist Hospital. As it turned out, however, Ms. Chase found her true calling as a music educator and remained as such until her retirement in 2005. Having earned an associate degree in vocal performance from the central campus of San Jacinto College in 1972, Ms. Chase was a vocal teacher and choral director for the institution from 1977 to 1993. She then served as a voice teacher in Lee College’s department of music from 1992 to 2004, utilizing several techniques to help students learn to use their voices as instruments. Outside of the classroom, she offered private music instruction to individuals in and around El Lago, and for three decades, was the music director of Webster Presbyterian Church, where she is also a deacon and elder. Now retired and thus able to devote more time to her passions and hobbies, Ms. Chase is a member of the United States Synchronized Swimming Foundation and has served as a coach, judge and member of the board of directors for the organization. She is also affiliated with the Bay Area Youth Singers, the Texas Choral Directors Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
