356 MILLENNIUM T he job of a materials engineer is one that requires dexterity and technical ability as they develop, process, and test materials that are used to create a range of products. Whether the end result of their work is a car or a computer, the materials engineer’s role is integral to the manufacturing process, and it is one in which Wilfried Smarsly has continued to grow. Presently an advanced materials representative for MTU Aero Engines, he has over 30 years of experience in his profession and nearly 15 in his current role. Born in Freckenhorst, Germany, Mr. Smarsly received a diploma from Westfälische Wilhelms University, the University of Münster, in 1980 and a doctor rerum naturalium from RWTH Aachen University in 1985. That same year, he began working as a research scientist for a German aeronautical organization in Cologne, where he would remain until 1985. For a brief period he made a living as an engineering consultant providing his expertise on materials handling and research before joining Motoren undTurbinen Union in 1987. Initially formed as a result of the merger of Mercedes-Benz Motorenbau Friedrichshafen GmbH and Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH, the corporation eventually split into two separate companies, MTU Aero Engines and MTU Friedrichshafen, which manufacture aircraft engines and internal combustion engines for commercial use respectively. While working for the former as the head of advanced materials and design, Mr. Smarsly earned a diploma in general management and a B.S. fromOpen University in 2000. In addition to his contributions to the company, Mr. Smarsly invented a production process for aeronautical and aerospace propulsion parts, obtained patents for novel intermetallic alloys for automotive and aircraft engines, and invented hollow metal sphere structures for safety engineering applications. A member of the Minerals, Metals &Materials Society, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde e.V., the DGMGerman Society for Material Science, he won an employee award for outstanding achievements as head of a technology project from the MTU Aero Engines board of presidents in 2015 and an award from the MTU executive board in 2016 for his continuous dedication to advancing the profession. Mr. Smarsly was also featured in the 11th edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and six consecutive editions of Who’s Who in the World.
