457 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine B . John Garrick is a credentialed research scientist who has dedicated his life to solving many of the questions that plague mankind. Dr. Garrick obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics from Brigham Young University, a Master of Science in engineering, and a Ph.D. in engineering and applied science from UCLA, and completed postgraduate work at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology. From 1975 to 1997, he served as president and chief executive officer of PLG, Inc. He was appointed by President George W. Bush as chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board in 2004, on which he served for two terms ending in 2012. He has made great strides throughout his career, including being a pioneer in the development and application of the risk sciences to the nuclear power, space, chemical, defense and transportation industries. He was also involved in building the first and largest staff of scientists and engineers dedicated exclusively to quantitative methods of risk assessment at PLG, Inc., and elevated risk assessment to a science and engineering discipline that has had a major impact on management cultures and the performance of large, complex engineered systems. T homas Edward Gates is a civil engineer, researcher, waste management administrator and lawyer who is well-versed in several fields. With a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Kansas State University, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Seattle University, Mr. Gates was able to secure his future. During his lengthy career, he has served in managerial positions for several organizations, including the Westinghouse Hanford Company, Sonalysts, Inc., and PLG, Inc, and contributed seven articles and 14 technological reports to engineering publications. In addition to his engineering career, Mr. Gates has been a consultant for the Electric Power Research Institute and Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and utilized his legal skills as judge pro tempore in Federal Way, Washington, a position he has held since 2013. Mr. Gates has received many awards and accolades, such as inclusion in “Outstanding Young Men of America,” being named one of Washington’s rising stars by Super Lawyers, and being nationally ranked among attorneys. He also received an award for excellence in legal services from the U.S. Commerce & Trade Research Institute. Currently, Mr. Gates is providing his knowledge and expertise as a consultant. B.
