97 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine J im Cowles became a lawyer because of the admiration he has for his father, who was drafted into World War I while in the process of earning his law degree. Inspired by his father’s hard work and dedication, Mr. Cowles decided to embark on what would become a fruitful career in law. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Texas in 1958 and 1961, respectively. Shortly after, he gained admittance to the U.S. Supreme Court in Texas; the East, West, North, and South Districts of the U.S. District Court; and the Fifth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals. He ventured into the legal field as a founder and later a shareholder of Cowles & Thompson, where he has remained since 1978. Mr. Cowles has accomplished much throughout his career, including being named a True Texas Legend by the Texas State Bar and One of Texas’ 25 Greatest Lawyers, and being included in 500 Leading Lawyers in America, Top 15 Business-Defense Lawyers in Dallas/Fort Worth, Top 10 Lawyers in Texas, Top 100 Super Lawyers in Texas, Best Lawyers in Dallas, and Best Lawyers in America. He remains active in the field as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Defense Research Institute, the Texas Bar College, the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, the Dallas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
