349 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine T heodore Leslie Shear Jr. is an archeologist and educator whose interests lie in classical Greek literature and epigraphy. Before embarking on a career in education, Dr. Shear participated in architecture expeditions all over the Eastern Mediterranean, including journeying to Eleusis and Perati in 1956. He again worked on archeological expeditions in Mycenae from 1953 to 1954, 1958, 1962 to 1963 and 1965 to 1966, Corinth in 1960 and Morgantina, Sicily in 1962. Additionally, he served as the director of excavations in the Athenian Agora from 1968 to 1994 and worked extensively on the topography and monuments of classical Athens during some of his previous excavations. To prepare for his professional career, Dr. Shear obtained a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude in 1959 and a Master of Arts in 1963 from Princeton University. He was an instructor of Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College From 1964 to 1966, and in the same year obtained a Ph.D. He served one more year at Princeton as assistant professor before making his alma mater his home. From 1967 to 2009, Dr. Shear was an assistant professor of art and archeology, an associate professor, chairman of the program in classical archaeology, and a professor of classical archaeology. Dr. Shear remains active in his field as a member of the Archaeological Institute of America, the Society for Classical Studies, formerly known as the American Philological Association, and an honorary member of the Archaeological Society at Athens. He has served as a member of the managing committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens since 1972 and was granted the White Fellowship from the institution from 1959 to 1960.
