357 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine A llie Maitland Smith is a retired engineering educator who has dedicated over 50 years to his field. Dr. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and graduated with honors in 1956. That same year, he began working as an associate engineer for the Lockheed Martin Corporation. A year later, he began working for the Western Electric Company as a development engineer and remained in that position for three years while also serving as an instructor at North Carolina State University. Through hard work and dedication, he become an assistant professor and joined the technical staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Burlington, N.C. He obtained a Master of Science in aerospace engineering from North Carolina State University in 1961, and then worked as a research project engineer for the Research Triangle Institute from 1962 to 1966. In 1966, he obtained a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. After receiving the credentials he needed to flourish, Dr. Smith continued to progress professionally. He was a research supervisor, adjunct professor, professor of mechanical engineering, and dean of the University of Mississippi School of Engineering, gaining emeritus status with the university in 2000. He has served on the boards of many engineering organizations and conferences and contributed his knowledge to the field as a writer and editor. Dr. Smith is also credited with the discovery of anomalous refraction maxima phenomena. While Dr. Smith has reached many achievements in his career, his greatest was acting as general chairman of the 17th annual American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics meeting, which took place in 1979 in New Orleans. He has been affiliated with numerous engineering organizations, including the National Society of Professional Engineers.
