358 MILLENNIUM B iophysicists like Ian Smith are trained to investigate living organisms and study how chemical compositions affect living cells. Dr. Smith’s curiosity turned into a career after he obtained a Master of Science in physical chemistry from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from Cambridge University. He also received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Manitoba with honors, a diploma in technology from Red River College, and honorary doctorates from the University of Stockholm, the University of Winnipeg, Brandon University and the Polish Academy of Sciences. With all the knowledge acquired from his education, Dr. Smith started a fruitful career as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. To learn more about the field, he worked as a research scientist with Bell Telephone Laboratories for a year and as a research officer in biological sciences at the National Research Council from 1967 to 1987. He became director general for the council’s Institute of Biological Sciences in Ottawa and later founder and director general of the Institute for Biodiagnostics in Winnipeg. He currently serves as chief executive officer and board chairman of CIMTEC, a company that specializes in the commercialization of imaging technology. Dr. Smith also served as an adjunct professor of chemistry and biophysics and a board member for several related organizations. Throughout his career, he has received many accolades and awards for his contributions. A highlight of his career was guiding one of his research students to start Novadaq, a company that enables physicians with point-of-care imaging solutions to improve quality and lower health care costs while creating 200 jobs worldwide.
