359 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine O les M. Smolansky is a retired professor who was born May 2, 1930 in the Ukraine. Wanting to embark on a successful career, he immigrated to the United States in 1950. Three years after settling in, Dr. Smolansky obtained a bachelor’s degree from New York University and later continued his education, obtaining a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Columbia University. After graduating, he relocated to California and became an instructor at UCLA, serving two years at the institution before making Pennsylvania his home. Once there, he began working at Lehigh University as an assistant professor. During his time at the institution, he continued to progress into other positions, including associate professor, professor and university professor. In 2005, he obtained the status of university professor emeritus. Dr. Smolansky has reached many achievements in the span of his career, including receiving a joint fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation as well as a senior research joint fellowship from the Research Institute on Communist Affairs and the Middle East Institute at Columbia University. One of his greatest honors was the establishment of the Oles M. Smolansky Award for Academic Excellence in International Relations. Created in 2011, the award is presented annually to a graduating senior who has achieved an outstanding academic record judged by the faculty of the International Relations Department of Lehigh University. His interest in international studies prompted him to write several books on various countries and their relationships to each other and contribute articles to a variety of professional journals. He is affiliated with a number of organizations, including the International Studies Association, the Middle East Studies Association, and the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, which granted him the Marshall D.
