362 MILLENNIUM P sychotherapists like Mary Allen Sochet use a variety of psychological techniques to help clients overcome psychiatric illnesses, such as depression, post- traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, addictions and obsessions. For over 24 years, Dr. Sochet has utilized her skills to help those in need as well as impart her knowledge to future psychotherapists. Her career began as a kindergarten teacher at Long Island Public Schools from 1958 to 1962 before she began teaching in New York City Public Schools from 1962 to 1964. That same year she began teaching on the postsecondary level as a professor of early childhood education, child development and psychology at Brooklyn College from 1964 to 1971. During her tenure there, she also served as program director and acting executive director of Newark Pre- School Council, psychotherapist of New York City Community Guidance Service, opened her private practice in New York City and as a staff consultant of Human Resources Institute until her retirement in 1982. Dr. Sochet’s extensive resume allowed her to contribute her knowledge as a lecturer, educational consultant, and editorial consultant in the field. She has co-authored with Robert Allen and has written articles on education, community organizations, peace and mental health to various journals. The highlight of Dr. Sochet’s career was working in Newark, N.J. during the early days of the Head Start Program. As part of this program, she worked closely with parents and families. She also served as an organizing member of the Children's Free School and her work in this regard was later adapted in the book "Sharing Our Children." She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Psychological Study Social Issues, and Psychologists for Social Responsibility. Dr. Sochet’s career is backed by a Bachelor of Science in childhood in education from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master of Arts in human relations and a Ph.D. in human development from New York University.
