367 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine F or over four decades Ann Stalheim-Smith has imparted her knowledge to students in postsecondary education. Dr. Stalheim-Smith was inspired to teach by her mother, a college graduate who taught all eight grades in a one-room school. Dr. Stalheim-Smith’s hard work and dedication to her field have earned her the Augustana College Alumnus Achievement Award in 1994, a grant from the National Science Foundation, and Kansas State University’s Distinguished Teaching Scholar Chair position from 1997 to 1988, an honor for which she was selected out of the entire faculty to receive. Before graduating from Augustana College in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science, she began working at the college as a teaching assistant from 1955 to 1958. Soon after she relocated to Colorado, where she began working at the University of Colorado as a teaching fellow and research assistant. In 1960 she earned a Master of Science from the same institution, then later became an instructor at Pacific Lutheran University. She continued to obtain similar positions in the following years at Fisk University and Kansas State University while obtaining a Ph.D. from Northern Arizona University. In 2003, she became professor emeritus at Kansas State University. Dr. Stalheim-Smith is an active member of her community. As part of the Family Promise Program at the First Christian Church of Mount Vernon, she continues to help homeless families in the area. The author of the textbook “Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology,” she has contributed articles to professional journals and is currently working on a memoir. Dr. Stalheim-Smith attributes her success to her enthusiasm for learning and her ability to share that enthusiasm and knowledge with students.
