372 MILLENNIUM T hroughout Donald Steward’s career in nuclear engineering at General Electric, he has developed several unique problem-solving techniques. Dr. Steward’s choice to enter this field was influenced by his father, who was very interested in science. To prepare for his fruitful career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and mathematics from Iowa State College, a Master of Science in mathematics from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin. In addition to his tenure with General Electric, he has served in computer systems with the Burroughs Research Laboratory and econometric modeling with the Social Systems Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin. He was also an instructor of business systems at Virginia Commonwealth University and software engineering at California State University. Dr. Steward is the author of several works, including two books, “Systems Analysis and Management: Strategy and Design” and “Software Engineering with Systems Analysis and Design,” and is currently working on his third book, tentatively titled “Solving Today’s Problems to Achieve a Better World.” He worked on a contract with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency on detecting violations of arms control agreements and participated in the Mississippi Summer Freedom Project in 1964. He has reached many achievements in his career, including developing the Dependency Structure Method, which resulted in his invitation to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a visiting scholar and the method’s widespread use in engineering and a series of annual international workshops.
