380 MILLENNIUM C lassified among the World Health Organization’s list of the most current pressing pandemic and epidemic diseases, influenza, yellow fever and smallpox are all caused by viruses that spread through human interaction and can have devastating effects on entire populations. As a virologist and former professor who has contributed nearly 500 articles and papers to scientific journals, GiulioTarro maintains research interests in antiviral chemotherapy, cancer immunotherapy, and the pathology of AIDS to bring about medical advancements. The recipient of an MD and a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Naples, Dr. Tarro began his career as a medical pathology assistant for the institution before a brief period spent as an assistant professor and pediatric cancer research associate in Cincinnati, Ohio. He returned to Italy and resumed working for the University of Naples, first as a professor of oncologic virology and then as a professor of microbiology and immunology from 1972 through 2006. During this time, he also served as chief of the division of virology and president of the ethics committee at the D. Cotugno Hospital for Infectious Diseases, from which he retired in 2006. In addition to his several academic appointments, Dr. Tarro has lectured worldwide at scientific conferences and committee meetings, and held leadership roles in organizations with which he is affiliated, including the Italian Society of Immuno-Oncology, the American Society for Microbiology, and The New York Academy of Sciences, of which he is a fellow. Considered an expert on the flu virus, he is also credited for his detection of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) as a factor in infant deaths in Naples and discovery of tumor-liberated proteins as tumor-associated antigens. Dr. Tarro is a highly respected member of the medical community who has won several awards for his contributions to the profession, including First Prize in Biomedical Research from the Italian Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sbarro Health Research Organization.
