381 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine S hoji Teramura has achieved much throughout his less than 30-year career as a linguistics instructor. Desiring to learn about the nature of language and the way that people communicate, Mr. Teramura embarked on a career that would prove fruitful. His interest in modal expressions in English helped him to obtain a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts at Osaka University in Toyonaka, Japan. Soon after obtaining his master’s degree, he became a linguistics instructor for Wakayama University, remaining in that position for 28 years. His expertise allowed him the opportunity to become a visiting scholar at Lancaster University in England, where he spent 10 months gaining more knowledge about his field. Throughout his career, Mr. Teramura has written a few books in the field of linguistics. He is the co-author of The Kenkyusha Dictionary of English Linguistics and Philology and the co-editor of the second edition of Shogakukan Random House English-Japanese Dictionary. He has also contributed articles to professional journals, including the Bulletin of the Faculty of Education at Wakayama University. Mr. Teramura became involved in many professional organizations in the field of linguistics, some of which include the English Literary Society of Japan, the English Linguistic Society of Japan, and the Japan Association of College English Teachers. Mr. Teramura’s passion for analyzing the ways people use language has not withered in his retirement, as he is still driven to continue studying and publishing in the field. Due to health issues, Mr. Teramura has to do so from his home, but as time progresses and he heals, he hopes to visit English-speaking countries and once again employ his knowledge as a consultant for new projects and opportunities.
