382 MILLENNIUM I t is a psychiatric nurse practitioner’s job to ensure that patients with mental disorders receive the counseling and psychopharmaceutical management necessary to maintain mental stability and health. In order to execute their duties, they should be able make their patients feel comfortable and most of all be compassionate like Frances Terry. Before embarking on a successful career in nursing, she obtained a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Seattle University, a Master of Science in nursing at the University of Washington, as well as an advanced RN practitioner license from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Ms. Terry began her career as a health enhancement program nurse at the Central Area Senior Center in Seattle, Wash., and continued to excel as a staff nurse, a prescribing and consulting nurse for the Community House Mental Health Agency, and a psychiatric mental health practitioner at Harborview Medical Center. She also served as a nursing instructor for Shoreline Community College and Seattle University and a nurse case manager in mental health at the University of Washington. She even took on a prestigious position as a director of health services at Northwest Center before ending her fruitful career as a public health nurse for the Seattle & King County health department. While Ms. Terry is retired, she remains active in various aspects of her field. She is a volunteer facilitator for a diabetes support group at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Seattle and a member of the Seattle Central Foundation. She keeps herself abreast of progression in her field as a member of the Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization as well as the American Nurses Association, Inc. Her desire to help those with mental disorders has led her to be recognized as an outstanding nurse by the UWMedical Center, named to the Washington State Nurses Association Hall of Fame, and honored at the Washington State Nurses Association centennial celebration.
