385 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine S heila Tobias is a writer who has made an art and a science of being an outsider to science and mathematics. For over three decades, Ms. Tobias has utilized her literary prowess to help those who have experienced similar setbacks in the subjects of math and science. She began her professional career in Frankfurt, Germany, where she was a general factotum, reporter and freelance journalist for the Army Times Publishing Company. From 1964 to 1965, she served as a freelance radio journalist for CBC/ Radio-Canada before becoming assistant director of Upward Bound in Charleston a year later. Throughout her career she has been able to share her knowledge as a lecturer for many institutions, including the University of Southern California, the University of California, San Diego, and Claremont Graduate University. Ms. Tobias is the author of several books about struggling with math and science, including “Overcoming Math Anxiety,” “Succeed with Math,” “Revitalizing Undergraduate Science: Why Some Things Work and Most Don’t” and “Science as a Career: Perceptions and Realities.” She has gained support from the Ford Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Research Corporation, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Her groundbreaking work in the field has made her a sought-after consultant on college and university curricula, general education and post-baccalaureate alternatives. She attributes her success to leaving a field for which she was not a good fit and having the courage to understand and acknowledge when something is not for her. Ms. Tobias earned a Bachelor of Arts from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University in 1957, as well as a Master of Arts and a Master of Philosophy from Columbia University. She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Association for Higher Education, MentorNet and the Association for Women in Science.
