387 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine J oseph B. Tompkins Jr. is a well-respected and highly regarded lawyer who specializes in civil and white- collar criminal litigation matters. Before becoming the honorable and decorated lawyer he is today, Mr. Tompkins graduated summa cum laude, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in politics from Washington and Lee University, and later a Juris Doctor and master’s degree in public policy at Harvard University. Upon graduating, he was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1975. Since then he has also been admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the D.C. Circuit and the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh Circuits of the U.S. Court of Appeals. He took his credentials and litigation prowess and became an associate of Sidley Austin LLP. He remained there for four years until becoming associate director of office policy and management analysis in the criminal division of the U.S. Department of Justice in 1979. He continued to progress, making his way back to Sidney Austin as a partner, a position he has held since 1982. One of the leaders of the firm’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act practice, he has represented both corporate and individual clients. Mr. Tompkins remains abreast of matters of the legal field through his memberships and affiliations, including the Virginia Bar Association, the D.C. Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, and has been active in the ABA’s Criminal Justice Section since 1980. He has served on the Dean’s Council at the Harvard Kennedy School for over 10 years and is also a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Va., where he has served on the endowment committee for many years.
