389 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine B acked by four decades of experience, Robert Ernest Tranquada is a renowned and well-respected internist and educator. Since the age of 5, Dr. Tranquada knew that he wanted to practice medicine. To prepare for that journey, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Pomona College and a medical degree from Stanford University. He has also received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Pomona College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, as well as an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine (now the National Academy of Medicine) in 1983. Dr. Tranquada began his professional career as an intern and resident at the newly opened UCLA Medical Center and the affiliated Los Angeles VA Hospital from 1955 to 1958 and became a fellow in endocrinology at UCLA. In 1959 he became a fellow in diabetes and endocrinology and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Southern California. There he became an associate professor in 1964 and chair of the department of community medicine. In 1969 he became medical director of the LA County/USC Medical Center and associate dean of the USC School of Medicine. From 1976 to 1979 he served as associate dean of the UCLA School of Medicine and from 1979 to 1986 as chancellor and dean of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. In 1986 he returned to the USC School of Medicine as dean until 1991, when he became the Norman Topping/National Medical Enterprises Professor of Medical and Public Policy, serving as such until his retirement in 1997. During his lengthy career, Dr. Tranquada has reached many milestones and achievements, which includes serving on the boards of Pomona College, where today he is the chair emeritus of the board, the Keck Graduate Institute, and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. He believes that to be successful, one has to prepare themselves to be of service to others and take advantage of appropriate opportunities that are offered.
