400 MILLENNIUM D iplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Sleep Medicine, Arthur Walters has shared his knowledge of the human brain as a neurology professor for over four decades. Dr. Walters has influenced to pursue medicine by the family members on his mother’s side who were physicians and scientists doing original creative scientific work as well as both of his parents who were involved in issues of social justice, which inspired him to help others through medical research. To prepare for his career he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Kalamazoo College in 1965, a Master of Science from Northwestern University in 1967 and a Doctor of Medicine fromWayne State University in 1972. He sharpened his skills as an intern at Oakwood Hospital and soon after gained residency in neurology at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. With newfound knowledge and skills, he segued into education as an assistant professor of neurology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and continued to prosper gaining many other teaching positions, including professor of neurology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a position he has held since 2008. With the drive to succeed, Dr. Walters has reached many achievements in his career, including forming the first medical advisory board of the Restless Legs Syndrome, the International Restless Leg Syndrome study group comprised of 130 physicians & scientists from 17 countries dedicated to research on Restless Leg Syndrome & Periodic Limb Movements in sleep. Thus far his biggest accomplishment is seeing the growth of the field and seeing that more and more patients with restless legs syndrome receive the correct diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Walters attributes his success to his desire and passion for what he is doing. Looking to the future he would like to stay involved in patient care, teaching and research. He is considered a worldwide expert in the field of sleep movement disorders, particularly restless legs syndrome.
