To prepare for her career, Dr. Wieand obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Manchester College in 1963, a Master of Arts from Ball State University in 1977, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside in 1983. While advancing through her master’s and Ph.D. programs, she was certain that she wanted to combine teaching and psychotherapy as a career, and has been doing so for over three decades. She has trained many students studying to become therapists in many psychotherapy modalities, including client-centered, gestalt, cognitive behavioral therapy, sexual therapy, and most currently, family and systems approaches. During graduate school, she served as a research associate at Loma Linda VA Hospital from 1980 to 1982. After her Ph.D, she became a professor of psychology at Humboldt State University from 1982 to 2014. Although Dr. Wieand enjoyed teaching, she also enjoyed being a psychotherapist, which subsequently led to her opening up a private practice in San Francisco, California. Intrigued by the Gottman approach to relationship therapy, she utilizes her training at various levels to help couples through counseling. In an effort to cater to those who shy away from the term “therapy,” she also runs workshops for couples that are growth-enhancing. Dr. Wieand has lent her knowledge to many books about psychology and psychotherapy and continues to be an avid contributor to her field as a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the Association for Psychological Science and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.
